What to look for in a running shoe?

I know this is a dumb question, but how do you know if a running shoe fits you. What are some of the things that I should look for when buying a running shoe, how are running shoes different than other tennis shoes? I'm a runner: My first pair was from reeboks and they were too tight in width i guess i have a slightly wide foot, My second pair was new balance, and they were toooo scratchy inside, not soft, my third pair was a nice pair of nikes, but they were too high in the back, really cut the back of my foot, I put some heel insoles, but they moved around still cut me in the back. My fourth pair were puma, and they felt like heaven inside super soft felt like walking on clouds, but they are not actual running shoes. I need to know what to look for when buying running shoes, I guess I have a low arch and wide feet dont know if you are recommendation of reeboks, reeboks lasted the longest. I really want some nice shoes that bend as i run, hike and dont have me limping later.

In a running shoe, you should look for a supportive arch and if you have wide feet, most brands come in a wide size. You should have adequate padding on the ball of your foot and your heel. A good way to test if they are actual running shoes (not like Pumas) is jump and land flat on your feet. You will probably feel a little discomfort, but it should be reduced. The new Under Armour shoes sound like they might fit you well. I hope you find your perfect shoe!
